One of The Biggest Myths About Hypnosis

I have family members and friends who are afraid of hypnosis. They believe that hypnosis is a form of mind control.

Hypnosis being a form or mind control is one of the biggest myths out there.

If the the only form of hypnotism you’ve been exposed to is the stage hypnotist and the Hollywood type of hypnotism, I understand why you would believe this myth.

The old Hollywood hypnosis movies were based on the misconception that hypnosis was hocus-pocus. Many of the movies depicted unscrupulous men using hypnosis to take advantage of women. Positive portrayals of hypnosis in movies are few and far between. Recently, there has been a couple – Shallow Hal 2001 and Trance 2013.

The biggest influence that most people are exposed to is the stage hypnotist.

The stage hypnotist is a performer who uses hypnosis to entertain. He/she knows how to pick the perfect candidate – not everyone is a good candidate for the hypnotist’s antics, not even me, and I’m a hypnotherapist.

Stage hypnotists choose individuals that are uninhibited, and more suggestible to hypnosis than the average person. I learned from the late Dr. John Kappas, founder of The Hypnosis Motivation Institute that somnambulists are the best candidates for the stage hypnotist.

Somnambulist: someone who walks about in their sleep

Hypnosis is a relaxed, suggestible, focused state of mind but you’re always in control. Here’s an example will make understanding hypnosis easier -  think of the different emotions you experience watching movies. You feel fear; you laugh, cry, and have strong feelings of love or hate.

How or why did this happen?

These emotions are triggered because you entered the state of hypnosis - consciously you know the movie is not real but your subconscious mind (home of your emotions) responds to stimuli whether they are real, replicated or imagined. However, you remain in control of you. You can walk out of the movie, turn off the television, or make a decision to not allow the movie to affect you in anyway.

A hypnotherapist/hypnotist, in essence, replaces the movie; he/she is the facilitator that helps you to reach a relaxed, suggestible, focused state of mind called hypnosis. In this state a hypnotherapist helps you to achieve goals and a stage hypnotist uses it to have fun. In both situations you remain in control, you can walk away or allow yourself to have the experience.

So, relax  family and friends - throw this myth under the bus, hypnosis is not mind control.

Comparison Kills Joy: How to Stop Comparing and Start Appreciating You

What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.”
― Scott Westerfeld

Yes, comparison kills joy.

I’m not sure if men do this but I know for a fact that when it comes to physical beauty – women are always comparing themselves to other women, and they never measure up.

Comparing yourself to others is a toxic and dis-empowering mind-set. It will crush your spirit and destroy your self-esteem.
Can you relate to these and/or other negative thoughts?

She is so beautiful! She has nice legs! Her breasts are bigger than mine! She's thinner! Etc.

Are you always making comparisons with other women thinking they are more physically attractive than you? Beauty is skin deep. You can never buy it during a shopping spree or find it within the glossy pages of your favorite fashion magazine.

Stop comparing yourself to other women. We are all made differently. What joy would there be, if everybody looked exactly the same?  How would we tell each other apart? And won’t men find us desperately boring?

Stop looking at the lip-gloss she wears or the Prada bag that she carries; they may be nice to look
at. But they do little for self-worth. That comes from the belly within.

Self-appreciation comes from loving yourself. It comes from being true to yourself and appreciating yourself just the way you are. It comes from having lips that only speak well about people and eyes that only see the best in people.

Comparison kills joy and it's a sign of low-confidence and poor self-esteem. Be confident and realize that there are many things to like about you. Be contented with these things. Someone somewhere might just be dying to have these qualities!

Comparing yourself to others is a time waster; it will only lower your confidence levels. There is no one out there like you, who has your experiences or abilities. So love yourself and be optimistic about
your possibilities. Never look down on yourself. Celebrate yourself. Show your body respect by taking care of it.

You can also go on a night out with yourgirlfriends and feel good about life. And if the conversation starts to veer towards not being good enough, tell your friends that there are more interesting things in life to be talking about. And when you do not feel like hitting the town with your girlfriends and want to stay at home, no problem!

Do not drag your feet around the house looking like what the cat brought in. Get dressed in your favorite clothes and put on your favorite music and dance.

Furthermore, keep a dairy and write down the things you love about you. Make a wish list and write down places you would like to see, people you would love to meet, or new skills you would like to
acquire. Things like these make you focus on the good about yourself and are a reminder that there can never be another you.

You are amazing. Give yourself permission to celebrate your uniqueness.

If you can’t stop yourself from comparing, try self-hypnosis. Hypnosis for self-confidence works – it will open the door for your joy to come back in.
